HISTORY
1983 was the beginning of our journey that led us from San Francisco to Big Sur. It's a classic tale of city folks with a hankering to raise a few kids and live off the land in one of the world's most beautiful places.
On a small parcel of land, on the west side of the Santa Lucia mountain range we planted a small grove of olive trees, and an essential oil garden of lavender and citrus and made hand crafted soaps. First client was Post Ranch and we would hand deliver to them on our trips to Big Sur.
Surrounded by artisan farmers and beekeepers, and cheese producers, we were excited to plant grapes to see what might grow best in our soils. Over time a few varietals of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir showed great promise. It seemed our place had the right elements - its proximity to the ocean, summer heat during the day and cool nights.
Winemaking started as a hobby. Love the Rhone varietals and for many years we picked Grenache, Syrah, and Petit Sirah from neighboring vineyards. Kids stomped the grapes in small batches and we blended these three varietals together. Some vintages were definitely better than others. But this wine - we call "Big Sur Red" - embodies all the things we love and feel about Big Sur. The wine is bold, with big flavors yet a bit mysterious. Over the years we have grown into a small family business. As we better understood the terroir and became more sophisticated with our winemaking goals we moved to the next level.
Teamed up with Ryan Kobza, a young winemaker working in Monterey County since 2011. He has an adventurous flair and unique approach to winemaking.
NOW
Big Sur is our home. We live with mountain lions, lizards and snakes, a rogue bear, monarch butterflies and the local condor. Rising from near extinction just a few years ago, the condor has made a remarkable comeback.
Every day we drive a stretch of the central coast with its unparalleled beauty. Our labels reflect our love of nature that exists in our own front yard.
We shoot video and photographs to capture the beauty of the ocean, the amazing natural architecture of the seascape, and the ever-changing skies and sunsets.
These images are the inspiration for our wine labels. To us, they represent some of the most iconic creatures and locations found in Big Sur.
A percentage of proceeds from the sale of our wines go to support a number of organizations that work to protect our rich environment. To learn more about these projects, go to bigsurvineyards.com.
Big Sur Vineyard's Carmel location can be found on the east side of Lincoln between 5th and 6th in the courtyard adjacent to Christopher's Restaurant.
