  • Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) August 14, 2013 - This weekend, in honor of the United Nation's International Day of Youth, thousands of children getting ready to go back to school will receive an education of a more basic sort - an education in their basic human rights.

Youth for Human Rights of Florida will be on hand to distribute copies of the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to ask students and their parents to sign a petition requesting that Human Rights education be made a part of elementary, middle and high school education.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, spearheaded by Eleanor Roosevelt and adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1948, delineates 30 specific rights granted to every person of earth as a part of the human race. These rights include the right to not be discriminated against, the right to an education and the right to be innocent until proven guilty.

Since 1990, the United Nation's has honored August 12th as the International Day of Youth, this year focusing on youth migrants.

"The reasons young people migrate are many," stated UN Secretary General Ban-ki Moon in his 2013 message regarding this day. "Some are fleeing persecution, others are escaping economic hardship…In transit and at their final destinations, many young migrants face equal or greater struggles, including racism, xenophobia, discrimination and human rights violations. Young women, in particular, face the risk of sexual exploitation and abuse."

As most people do not know that they have fundamental rights, or even what these rights are, Youth for Human Rights of Florida plans to raise awareness this weekend for all youth about their own basic rights. This is a part of their on-going educational program to curb bullying and violence between youth.

Educational materials include "The Story of Human Rights," a documentary video that illustrates the history of human rights through the ages; booklets; public service announcements that educate youth and adults on the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; as well as teaching aids that include a study guide, activities manual and educator's classroom kit.

These materials are available in 17 languages and more than 100 million people around the world are reached with the program each year.

As humanitarian and Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard stated, " Very few governments have implemented any part of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These governments have not grasped that their very survival depends utterly upon adopting such reforms and thus giving their peoples a cause, a civilization worth supporting, worth their patriotism."

It is in the spirit of Mr. Hubbard's statement that "Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream" that members of the Church of Scientology sponsor this secular, grass-roots program, funding the printing and distribution of these educational materials.
