  • (1888PressRelease) September 17, 2011 - New Delhi, India: san-kranti, the ongoing nationwide student challenge initiated by the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), is initiating two dozen Urban Cafe discussions in collaboration with Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) across Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata. Urban Cafes will build on the ongoing momentum of young people to make a change in India and focus on the renewal of the neighbourhoods, towns and cities they live in. The Urban Cafes will be rolled out in metropolitan cities; and build out to other cities and towns across India.

The Youth Outreach for Urban Renewal (YOUR) initiative starts today and these sessions will be open to all visitors on a first come basis. These conversations will be lead by IIHS representatives, advisors and subject matter experts. The event schedule will be posted on the san-kranti and Cafe Coffee Day social media sites. The topics to be taken up at the Urban Cafe's will be announced one day in advance.

Discussions will typically take place in three distinct phases.
    1. Introductions and initial overview on the topic. One minute for each participant
    2. Detailed discussion on the topic. Two minutes for each participant
    3. An open discussion round moderated by the host.

A summary of the conversation will be updated on the san-kranti portal. Apart from this, live Tweets and Facebook uploads will take place during the event. Participants' feedback will be shared.

The Urban Cafe will be a platform that will bring 8-10 minds together to discuss city-focussed urban challenges. A well-lit, low noise area will be chosen in CCD.

"A lot can happen over coffee, and 'The Youth Outreach for Urban Renewal partnership' with Cafe Coffee Day will open up a series of conversations on how we can change our neighbourhoods and cities for the better", said Director of IIHS, Aromar Revi. "We are proud of this initiative; it will leverage the spirit of positive change in the country today and enable young people to come together. They can discuss the challenges we face as urban citizens on a daily basis and provide solutions to them which we can help implement. Based on requests from students entering the challenge, we have extended the application deadline to October 1, 2011"

He also added, "We will do our best to take the urban cafes and san-kranti beyond the realm of conversation into reality. Rs.300,000 will be available to the three best teams to implement the most promising solutions that emerge across the country"

K Ramakrishna, President Marketing at Cafe Coffee Day said, "Cafe Coffee Day has always been a place much loved by the young and young at heart in the country. It is a place wherein they meet for leisure, work to plain simple banter. The cafe space is one that empowers each to think and express freely; it is a great aggregator of youth. We believe that the Urban Cafe will provide our customers opportunities to discuss issues that impact our lives on a daily basis and we see san-kranti as a great platform to be part of this urban renewal."

The san-kranti student challenge is a component of the India Urban Conference 2011, the India's largest urban conference of 2011. The people working behind the scenes to make India Urban Conference 2011 happen are The Indian Institute for Human Settlements Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy and Yale University in collaboration with the Ministry of Urban Development, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation of the Government of India.
