- (1888PressRelease) May 13, 2011 - Alberta, Canada - In a survey of more than 14,000 IT professionals conducted by industry staffing firm PROTECH, 88 percent of all currently employed IT talent is willing to leave their current employer.
The percentage has increased from an already high figure of 81 percent the year prior, but this comes as no surprise to David Papp, author of "IT Survival Guide: Conquering Information Technology in Your Organization." He says that strong relationships between IT personnel and company executives are often lacking.
"The problem of poor relationships between company executives and IT managers is a double-edged sword," Mr. Papp explains. "Business executives don't take the time to understand their information technology systems while IT managers spend little time developing the social skills needed to communicate with business owners effectively."
Because of poor communication, needed investments in effective IT systems get neglected, according to David. This results in IT managers handling emergency after emergency rather than utilizing their skills for business growth and development.
"The fact that this statistic is not only high but also increasing shows support that the relationships between IT personnel and executives are not ideal," he concludes. "In the healthy companies with which I consult, open dialogue about what is best for the organization lies at the heart of these relationships."
Papp states that aligning an IT plan with the overall goals and mission of the company is crucial in today's competitive, fast-paced environment. Business owners must be willing to overcome their hesitancy about learning about IT issues while IT personnel must learn the relationship skills needed to communicate IT needs properly. Both are musts in order to improve IT personnel retention.
