  • (1888PressRelease) June 11, 2020 - National education charity, Ripple Foundation, today announces Tvisha Lakhani, Grade 7, (Mount Pleasant Village Public School, Brampton, ON) and Brynne Storey, Grade 4, (Brooksbank Elementary School, North Vancouver, BC) as dual-winners of its eighth Canada-wide Kids Write 4 Kids (KW4K) 2019/20 creative writing challenge.

Tvisha’s novel, ‘Through the Mirror’, journeys with protagonist Nicole Leblanc through her discovery of a magic portal to a distant kingdom, where she is charged with a crime she didn’t commit, and has only a few hours to prove her innocence. The book will soon be officially published, and all book sale proceeds will be donated to a charity of Tvisha’s choice.

Brynne’s novel, ‘The Sheeps’ Journey’, was inspired by a photo of a rainbow sheep and imagines what life would be like for a regular sheep in a world of rainbow sheep and some of the dangers they might face. The book will soon be officially published, and all book sale proceeds will be donated to a charity of Brynne’s choice.

This year’s writing contest’s judging panel consisted of three previous KW4K competition winners and nine other renowned panelists, including The Globe and Mail’s Book Editor, Judith Pereira, children’s book columnist, Jeffrey Canton and Associate Producer at CBC Books and Canada Reads, Jane van Koeverden. Submitted stories were rated on creativity, originality, story structure and the quality of writing.

Commenting on the judging process, Jeffrey Canton said: "What I especially admired about Through the Mirror and The Sheeps' Journey was the strong voices of the young writers and how well they managed their stories - things made sense all the way through, and the writers all had control of their material - I was both engaged and interested in what they were saying and I certainly felt that they were not only well-written but truly creative.”

KW4K is a nationwide contest where students (in grades 4-8) from across the country go head to head with their creative stories in grades 4 - 8 and is the only competition of its kind that gives Canadian youth the opportunity to become published writers before highschool. The program launched in 2012 and 15 books have been published by child authors since.

Ivy Wong, Founder of Ripple Foundation, said. “Every year we receive so many amazing, heart-warming stories from super talented youth across the country. I know it’s a very tough - and long - process for the judges to come to a decision because of this. Tvisha and Brynne’s stories really stood out from the crowd, and we are all excited about the next publishing stage in the process.

“We look forward to welcoming even more talented young writers to the competition opening in Fall 2020!”
