Yonkers Tennis Center: Celebrating By Educating and Greening the Community
Yonkers Dignitaries Came to Celebrate Yonkers Tennis Center's 40th Anniversary and Donation to Yonkers Partners in Education.
- New York, NY (1888PressRelease) November 11, 2010 - In celebration of 40 years of continuous operation, Yonkers Tennis Center President Joe Curto, Jr. made a $10,000 donation to Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE), a non-profit organization that strives to ensure quality education for Yonkers Public School students and helps prepare them for future education and success. YPIE Director of Programs Ellen Cutler Levy and Board of Directors Chairman T. Richard Fitzgerald were in attendance and extremely grateful for the contribution in support of the children of Yonkers.
State Assemblyman Mike Spano, Yonkers City Council President Chuck Lesnick, Councilmember Wilson Terrero, and representing Mayor Phil Amicone, Director of Community Outreach Services Michael I. Galvin came to commemorate the occasion and support the donation and the club. A representative from Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins' office also delivered a proclamation from the Senator. Along with the other dignitaries, Spano had a special message for Curto. "Certainly what you've done for Yonkers Partners in Education is something that just tells us all that you haven't forgotten your roots, and you're right here working for the people of Yonkers. Thank you," says Spano.
The event not only celebrated 40 years of tennis, but also the recent, eco-friendly renovations, which have made Yonkers Tennis Center the greenest tennis club in Westchester County. Initiatives include a donation box for Soles4Souls, where customers can drop off their used shoes for those in need. Thus far, there have been close to 300 pairs of shoes donated. Other improvements include recycled furniture, "green seal" cleaning products, reduced paper marketing, printing on recycled stock, and 100% Green-e certified renewable energy, which has helped reduce the club's carbon footprint by an amount equivalent to half a million miles of road traffic.
Representatives from Wilson, Dunlop and Head came to the event to demonstrate their latest gear. Guests also indulged in chair massages from Oasis Day Spa and treatments from acupuncturist Myoung Im. Raffle prizes included private tennis lessons, tennis camp, and more.
Curto, General Manager and Director of Tennis Simon Gale, and the coaches and staff at Yonkers Tennis Center were excited to celebrate and introduce their new facilities to guests, and mostly to be part of an ongoing initiative to give back to the community. Yonkers Tennis Center is hoping to conduct another 40 years of business and giving back, and with the unique, friendly staff and now highly sustainable facility, this seems likely.
