YoNaturals Thrives Despite Ailing Economy

Top Quote In the last year, we have seen some of the greatest financial giants of our time cower for protection from the government, as seemingly infallible corporations have waived the white flag in the face of the worst recession in recent history. But amidst the chaos and capitulation, a small but rapidly growing market sector has braved the raging storm and has even continued to grow exponentially. End Quote
  • San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) October 26, 2008 - “Healthy Vending” seemed like nothing more than an oxymoron a few years ago, and to the uninformed it may still seem that way. But in 2006, a small startup company called “YoNaturals” began to change all that. After studying the roaring success of health food store chains like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, the fledgling company put out its first line of healthy vending machines known as the “YoZone.” This combo vending machine housed both snacks and drinks in one machine, all of which were organic and natural. As we near the end of 2008, the company is experiencing phenomenal growth, even as the surrounding financial establishment has nearly burned to the ground.

What accounts for the incredible growth of the healthy vending industry and its resiliency in the face of our failing economy? Two market forces have combined to create a relatively stable demand for healthy vending products: the incessantly increasing demand for organics and the near invulnerability of low-priced goods such as those typically found in vending machines.

The first is nothing short of a worldwide phenomenon. In America alone, the organic food industry has grown from $1 billion a year to approximately $20 billion a year. Other countries have shown similar massive increases, even despite the rising costs of gas and food prices over the last year. It seems that Americans are continually valuing their health above their pocket books, even in times of financial crisis – or perhaps they simply see it as a wise investment, given the astronomical increase in the cost of health care.

The second factor is somewhat less surprising under scrutiny; vending machines simply do not lose their appeal during difficult times, especially given the ease of newer vending machines which often allow credit/debit purchases. YoNaturals is at the nexus of these two market forces which create both demand and stability, regardless of the surrounding landscape.

“People still want to snack when it’s convenient for them, and they still prefer healthy products,” says YoNaturals CEO Mark Trotter. “Slightly higher prices for these low-price goods are not affecting sales during these times.”

The YoNaturals business model involves selling machines to ‘distributors’ who own and operate the machines for profit without the ongoing fees typical of most franchises. Over 500 natural and organic vending products can be ordered with ease online and shipped nationwide; YoNaturals specialists assist the distributors in securing locations and in choosing products to sell that will perform well in a given area. The business more than doubled its number of distributors in 2008, and plans to double again in 2009 according to CEO Mark Trotter.

The recent success of YoNaturals is just one more indicator that our nation is sick and tired of being sick and tired. With child obesity and early onset diabetes reaching the status of epidemics in America, healthy vending couldn’t have come at a better time.
