Xiaojing Yan and Opus Art Collective collaborate on an intimate sculptural Nebula
Opus Art Projects, International Art Consultancy, Collaborates with Cross-Cultural Artist Xiaojing Yan to Celebrate Cultural Unity and Global Rebirth.
- (1888PressRelease) November 30, 2023 - Opus Art Projects, an art consulting agency based in Toronto, Canada, is launching their first collaboration with Chinese-Canadian visual artist Xiaojing Yan. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act in Canada, this collaboration offers a unique, limited edition of twenty-three Nebula, an intimately-scaled piece inspired by Yan's six meter Nebula installation exhibited at Hermès Maison, Shanghai, China in 2019.
Established Chinese-Canadian artist Xiaojing Yan is perfectly suited to be the inaugural artist of Opus Art Collective as 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Immigration Act in Canada (more commonly known as the Chinese Exclusion Act), which was the only time in Canadian history that one group was barred from entry based solely on their country of origin. Yan, as a first-generation Chinese-Canadian, creates artwork that explores the complexities of her immigrant experience through a bi-cultural lens. Acknowledging the country's painful past helps to ensure new generations of Canadians understand and learn from this history, while highlighting artwork by Chinese-Canadians helps to build stronger communities. The Opus-Yan sculptural collaboration embodies change and upheaval; "Just as volcanic activity destroys landscapes only to create new, fertile land, and the collapse of astronomical clouds leads to the birth of new stars, Yan’s work represents the moment where all past experiences collide to form a burst of infinite possibilities." - Chao Dan. Inspired by Yan's large-scale installation made of lava beads and golden threads, which echoes volcanic eruptions and cosmic explosions of worlds and experiences colliding and collapsing, Nebula is a piece created to share in the experience of rebirth after great change.
