Writers, Artists and Manila Officials Campaign Vs. Corruption on Balagtas Day
LIRA and SSKP, in cooperation with the Office of Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim, will gather at the Balagtas Shrine, Pandacan, Manila on April 2, 2011 to honor the country's premiere poet Francisco Balagtas on his 223rd birthday.
- (1888PressRelease) March 25, 2011 - The Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo (LIRA), the oldest active organization of poets in Filipino, and the Samahan ng Sining at Kalinangan ng Pandacan (SSKP), in cooperation with the Office of Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim will gather at the Balagtas Shrine, Pandacan, Manila on April 2, 2011, 7:00 A.M. to honor the country's premiere poet Francisco Balagtas on his 223rd birthday.
Dubbed "Pahayag: Panitikan Laban sa Korupsiyon," the celebration will feature writers and artists staging a short play in honor of Francisco Balagtas and a "balagtasan," the traditional Filipino debate in verse, by Dr. Michael M. Coroza, Professor Vim Nadera, and the "Prince of Balagtasan," Teo T. Antonio. LIRA will also release a cultural manifesto against corruption in the government.
The highlight of the event will be the crowning of flowers on the statue of Balagtas by Mayor Lim and LIRA's founder and adviser, National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, a.k.a. the poet Rio Alma. The pair will be assisted by the Knights of the Columbus from the San Fernando De Dilao Parish.
