World Soundtrack Awards Announces Discovery of the Year Nominees
The 15th Annual World Soundtrack Awards have selected the nominees for The Discovery of the Year. The Discovery award recognizes "upcoming" composers who have scored less than six films. The amazing part of this is that most of the composers who have won or been nominated for the award have gone on to score blockbusters and/or have won Oscars, Golden Globes or BAFTA awards.
- (1888PressRelease) September 11, 2015 - The World Soundtrack Awards will celebrate its 15th anniversary with legendary film composer, Alan Silvestri, (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Forrest Gump). A suite from Silvestri's score to the upcoming film The Walk will receive a worldwide premiere at the WSA. Film Fest Gent also recorded an album with the scores of Silvestri at Flagey Studios in Brussels, conducted by Music Director of Film Fest Gent Dirk Brossé and performed by Brussels Philharmonic. Due to Film Fest Gent's focus on British cinema this year, the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to composer Patrick Doyle at the World Soundtrack Awards. In addition to Doyle's honor and in line with tradition, 2014's Discovery of the Year Winner Daniel Pemberton will also be performing that evening. The 15th World Soundtrack Awards & Concert will take place on October 24, 2015 at Kuipke in Ghent. . The World Soundtrack Academy aims at supporting film music, sound design, composers, and their worldwide promotion. All info & tickets can be found on the www.worldsoundtrackawards.com.
The World Soundtrack Awards evolved as part of The Gent Film Festival and the 42nd edition will take place from 14 October until 25 October 2015 at Kinepolis Ghent, Vooruit, Studio Skoop, Sphinx, Bijloke, KASKcinema, Caermersklooster and Kuipke. Many legendary and accomplished composers received the Discovery of the Year award at the beginning of their careers. Artistic Director Patrick Duynslaegher states "If you are looking for the next generation of great composers, you just have to look at the World Soundtrack Discovery Awards where composers as Michael Giacchino, Gustavo Santaolalla, Craig Armstrong and Abel Korzeniowski were acknowledged by our Advisory Board early on in their careers.'. Last year, Daniel Pemberton was discovered by the WSA Advisory Board. This year Pemberton scored The Man From U.N.C.L.E and the critically acclaimed Steve Jobs. Pemberton stated "It was a wonderful honor to be selected as the Discovery of the Year at the last World Soundtrack Awards - to follow in the footsteps of so many great composers like Michael Giacchino, Gustavo Santaolla, and Craig Armstrong who've been given the accolade before was pretty humbling. Since then it feels like I haven't stopped and I'm ridiculously excited to hear the Brussels Philharmonic premiere pieces from my latest scores to Steve Jobs and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. at this year's concert. Plus I'm going to drink a lot of Belgium beer too. Hurrah."
The Discovery of the Year Award is aimed at encouraging emerging talent, who at the current WSA eligibility had scored no more than six theatrically released films (excluded are shorts, TV-formats & documentaries.) To qualify as an eligible score, the motion picture had to receive its world première screening between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015.
