World's largest hand carved rocking horse encourages young people to "Have a Go"
East Yorkshire Firm, The Rocking Horse Shop, has been selected to inspire an international audience to 'Have a Go' at a new skill at WorldSkills, London 2011. The Rocking Horse Shop is making the world's largest hand carved Rocking Horse which will be providing a 'hands on' opportunity for young people, at the world's greatest skills competition, to try out a new skill, Rocking Horse Carving.
- (1888PressRelease) September 22, 2011 - Chosen from nearly a hundred applicants The Rocking Horse Shop will provide visitors with a fun, 'bite size' taster of Rocking Horse Carving. The horse 'Bigger Bertie' will stand 14'2" (4.35m) high, 5'8" (1.725m) wide and 28'1" (8.56m) long and visitors will have an opportunity to take part in carving parts of him and also have a go at regular size Rocking Horses. "Carving is great fun and provides an opportunity to be really creative and make things that people really admire. I love to see the sense of achievement on woodworkers faces when they make their own Rocking Horse, they are hand crafting something that will survive many generations" says Master Carver Anthony Dew. "Designing and making Bigger Bertie has been an extremely satisfying project and as I say to everyone 'Bigger Bertie Rocks!'." The activity will be one of 46 Have a Go activities designed to ignite visitors' passion for learning and introduce them to skills they may never have considered as possible career options.
With 150,000 global visitors expected, including some of the world's most highly respected skills experts, The Rocking Horse Shop will demonstrate to the UK, and, the rest of the world that Yorkshire excels in skills training. "We are thrilled to be given this opportunity to take part in such a wonderful event, it will be great to see young adults having the chance to try their hands at carving." says Managing Director, Jane Cook " So many of our traditional skills have been lost and it is time to bring them back."
By taking part in the Competition,The Rocking Horse Shop will be contributing to the WorldSkills London 2011 Have a Go campaign target to deliver one million Have a Go activities around the UK.
The WorldSkills London 2011 Competition will take place over four days, from 5-8 October. It is one of the biggest events ever to be held at ExCeL London, and will see over 1,000 of the most skilled young people from all corners of the globe battling it out in 46 different skills, competing to be crowned the best of the best in their chosen skill. 'Have a Go' colleges and training providers will help inspire young people to think about their future jobs and careers and develop their skills.
