- (1888PressRelease) March 07, 2016 - Glaucoma is the leading cause of global irreversible blindness. Blindness ranked 3rd (after cancer and heart disease) as people's major fear. BiCOM Inc. with its Non-Corneal and Through-the-Eyelid DIATON Tonometer is challenging the "Sneak Thief of Sight" through awareness and screening events. BiCOM is advising and guiding all of its distributors located in over 60 countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Middle East to participate in the World Glaucoma Week on March 6th-12th through Screening and Awareness campaigns.
Since IntraOcular Pressure (IOP) is one of the major risk factors for developing Glaucoma, early detection is the key to preventing blindness.
World Glaucoma Week is a joint initiative between the World Glaucoma Association and the World Glaucoma Patient Association and has had a highly successful run for the past 8 years.
The number of people with glaucoma worldwide is expected to rise from 64 million to 76 million in 2020 and 111 million in 2040, with Africa and Asia being affected more heavily than the rest of the world. Primary open angle glaucoma is the most common form of the disease worldwide. The highest prevalences of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) are in African countries. This is not surprising since the increased risk of glaucoma among people of African descent has been widely accepted for many years. Genetic studies suggest that, although several loci have been identified as "glaucoma genes", inheritance of POAG is usually multigenic and multifactorial, having no identified association with a particular gene in most populations. Environmental factors and modifying genes are likely playing a part in disease development.
Throughout the year BiCOM Inc., and Diaton tonometer Team hold free screening events in conjunction with Department of Transportation (DOT), Lions Clubs International, Health Action Groups, Corporate health fairs, assists in remote screening missions as well as independent screening events at churches, synagogues and shelters.
Handheld Diaton Tonometer is ideal for mass screening because it is quick, painless and non-invasive procedure. The measurement is taken Through-the-Eyelid with no corneal contact, requiring no anesthesia and having no risk of infecting the eye.
For the 8th consecutive World Glaucoma Week, BiCOM Inc will be holding various screening awareness events throughout New York as well as internationally throughout its network of Diaton Tonometer distributors and cooperating partners.
Diaton Tonometer is intended for use by Inpatient & Outpatient Clinics such as Hospitals, Emergency Rooms, Nursing & Elderly Homes, General & Specialty Practitioners as well as Ophthalmologists and Optometrists.
Prevent Blindness America Survey estimates that over 4 million Americans have glaucoma, but only half of those know they have it. It is important to get the eye pressure (IOP) checked at least once a year. Glaucoma is 6 to 8 times more common in African-Americans than Caucasians. With early detection, medications and surgeries can be used to prevent further vision loss.
Roman Iospa, CEO of BiCOM Inc., stated, - "I would like to reiterate that early detection is most important and everyone should get screened, but early detection is only a first step. My company (BICOM Inc.,) is consistently investing into R&D of new technologies and currently sponsors a number of research projects in the field of blindness prevention due to glaucoma and a number of other eye diseases."
