A presentation to world famous playwright Brian Friel at The Bogside Artists’ studio on his 80th birthday.
Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (1888PressRelease) October 21, 2009 - Today saw a presentation made by The Bogside Artists to one of Derry’s most famous sons, globally renowned playwright Brian Friel. The artists presented Mr. Friel with a framed print of all of their murals that included the comment; “To a great man and a true friend.”
Brian Friel is known to be a very private person who, as a rule, shuns the limelight and has fought shy of many such engagements in his honour. It is a mark of the esteem that he holds for The Bogside Artists that he decided to make his way to their studio in The Bogside for this special presentation to mark his 80th birthday. He said; “I am very moved and very grateful boys for your speech. Thank you very much indeed. Of course we take The Bogside Artists for granted, far too much for granted, because they are a pheonomenon and indeed phenomenal.” phenomenal.”... This has been a very lovely occasion for me and a very memorable one.”
The event was attended of Brian’s closest friends and by many VIPs in the city; Mo Durkan and Angela Hughes of Ilex, reps from the Arts Council and the British Council, Oonagh McGillion of the city council, as well as journalists from the BBC and most of the leading Irish newspapers.
Tom Kelly, spokesman for the artists said; “We are great admirers of Brian’s work and have cherished his friendship over the years. We honour him, not just as a great writer but as a very great man on a par with Solzhenitsyn who, like him, has championed freedom of speech, justice and truth devotedly throughout his life and in his work. ”
