Woodbury University to Offer Bachelor's Degrees in Professional Writing, Public Safety Administration Beginning in Fall 2016
Unique Transdisciplinary Programs Prepare Students for Careers in Professional and Technical Communication, Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement.
- Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) September 15, 2015 - Woodbury University today announced it will expand its educational offerings to include a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Safety Administration and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Professional Writing beginning with the Fall 2016 term.
The two programs will be the latest developed by Woodbury's College of Transdisciplinarity, where the university's core values - Community, Integrity, Professionalism, Aspiration and Agility - intersect with its four educational pillars - Transdisciplinarity, Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship and Civic Engagement.
"In addition to supporting the liberal arts enterprise of the university, the mission of the College of Transdisciplinarity is to develop new degree programs that provide innovative career-ready options for students with interest in traditional liberal arts and sciences disciplines," said Douglas J. Cremer, Ph.D., dean of the College of Transdisciplinarity. "Students who enroll in these programs, as well as other programs at Woodbury, can look forward to academic, collaborative and experiential learning opportunities that ultimately prepare them for professions that will evolve as our communities evolve."
The Professional Writing program is designed to prepare students for careers as information architects, document designers and cross-cultural communicators who will be needed by industries, businesses, governments and non-profit organizations, said Reuben Ellis, Ph.D., department chair. Graduates will be qualified to pursue a number of career paths, including technical writing and editing, web authoring and digital design, public relations and communications, publication and creative management, and medical and grant/proposal writing.
"Professional writing means making complex ideas, processes or procedures understandable while working in exciting, information-driven environments," Ellis noted. "This program is designed to help meet the need for skilled professionals across Southern California by training students to write in various environments and genres, and to integrate writing and new media."
The Public Safety Administration program will focus on law enforcement, criminal justice, community relations, policing, corrections, societal reactions to offenders and the impact of crime on communities, according to Emerald Archer, Ph.D., department chair. Initially, the program will offer two areas of emphasis: law enforcement and legal studies. In coming years, the program will add community relations and forensic science options. Brian Fitch, Ph.D., a Lieutenant with more than thirty years experience in the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, will serve as the program's coordinator.
"In addition to providing a theoretical foundation, the Public Safety Administration program will promote the development of criminal justice professionals who are prepared to ethically lead public and private efforts to make our communities safer and promote the equitable application of the law across all boundaries," Archer said. "Students will work with faculty members who are active in the field and have the opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom through service learning projects, internships, and part-time and full-time jobs."
