Woodbury University Students Organize On-Campus Workshop On Scourge of Human Trafficking; Event Set for March 27
'Chosen: The Slave Next Door' to Focus on Awareness, Empowerment.
- Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) March 27, 2014 - It's an unspeakable problem, which is why a group Woodbury University students have chosen to talk about it.
The problem is human trafficking. According to the FBI, human sex trafficking is the most common form of modern-day slavery. Estimates place the number of its domestic and international victims in the millions, mostly females and children enslaved in the commercial sex industry for little or no money.
The workshop "Chosen: The Slave Next Door: Learn How You Can be a Voice for the Voiceless" - will take place on Thursday, March 27, at Woodbury University's Fletcher Jones Auditorium.
"Sex traffickers are very sophisticated and become friends with their victims and their families before they strike," said Angela Asanna, Woodbury undergrad and a U.S. Army Intelligence veteran who served in Afghanistan. Asanna's capstone project involves child sex-trafficking. "As a young girl, I was unsuccessfully targeted by sex traffickers and have dedicated my senior project to spreading awareness about this problem," she said. "Los Angeles has one of the highest rates of child sex-trafficking in the United States."
Who: Guest speakers include:
- Kathleen Kim: Kim is a Professor of Law at Loyola Law School, where she teaches immigration, torts and human trafficking. A co-author of the California Trafficking Victims Protection Act and a former practicing attorney, she has represented trafficking victims, written articles on human trafficking, and is a newly appointed member of the Los Angeles Police Commission. Kim has more than a dozen years' experience in human trafficking issues. She will speak about local cases of human trafficking, and how to spot someone that is being trafficked or sold.
- Kim Puccio:Puccio has been leading the charge against child sex trafficking in the San Fernando Valley. A Burbank resident and loving mother happily raising two daughters, she is courageously fighting through the nightmare that all parents fear.
