Woodbury University Student Teams Win Architecture Awards
'Inverted Landscape' Honored in Steel Competition; 'Hotel Plethora' Takes 2013 Pasadena & Foothill AIA Design Award.
- Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) October 24, 2013 - Woodbury University (www.woodbury.edu) today announced that two student groups from its School of Architecture have received prizes in separate competitions.
The first group was a prize winner in the annual Steel Competition, sponsored by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. The competition challenges students to design a structure inspired by, and constructed of, steel.
The second group took top honors in the student category of the 2013 Pasadena & Foothill American Institute of Architects Design Awards, an annual competition that recognizes outstanding design.
"The exemplary work these students submitted demonstrates a shared commitment to bringing powerful ideas to life," said Norman Millar, dean of the School of Architecture. "Our students learn how to experience architectural design as part of the world around them, fusing environment, culture and urbanism, and these two venues, the Steel Competition and the AIA Design Awards, proved a perfect showcase for our focus on blending classroom work and hands-on engagement."
• Steel Competition - "Inverted Landscape"
Students Byron Marroquin and Sal Vargas, under the guidance of their faculty sponsor, Joshua G. Stein, worked on a project called "Inverted Landscape." Playing on a design that blurs the border between Mexico and America, the project brings the political, cultural, social and artisan values of the two countries together. The project was executed with the aim of bringing El Colegio de La Frontera Norte (COLEF) and the Trans-border Institute into the same facility, allowing them to work together to advance their work.
Toward that end, and to encourage international conversation and cross-cultural understanding, Marroquin and Vargas designed the building to sit on the countries' physical and political border. Visitors within the structure unknowingly cross between the countries multiple times, affecting a sense of placelessness that allows for candid conversation and open exchange of information.

• 2013 Pasadena & Foothill AIA Design Awards - "Hotel Plethora"
Hovhanes Baylan, with faculty advisors Mark Owen and Phillip Ra, designed "Hotel Plethora," a boutique hotel located in the Venice Beach section of Los Angeles. The design aimed to accommodate and fuse the various personalities of the location and environment, while creating a high-end retreat for visitors. The design incorporates the beach and the boardwalk, while separating the guests for an exclusive feel, allowing them to participate and escape at the same time.
