Woodbury University's Dr. H. Eric Schockman Named to California Library Services Board
Chair of Woodbury Center for Leadership Joins Nine-Member Panel Overseeing State's Library Services Act.
- Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) January 29, 2014 - H. Eric Schockman, Ph.D, Chair and Associate Professor at the Center for Leadership at Woodbury University (www.woodbury.edu), has been named to the California Library Services Board, effective Jan. 1. Representing the public at-large, Dr. Schockman was appointed by the State Senate Rules Committee.
The California Library Services Board consists of nine members appointed by the Governor and four by the Legislature. The state board determines policy for and authorizes allocation of funds from programs of the California Library Services Act. Members serve for four years, representing various constituencies, and also comprise the State Advisory Council on Libraries for the federal Library Services and Technology Act. The State Librarian serves as Chief Executive Officer of the California Library Services Board.
"I'm honored to join the board and to contribute to the process of ensuring that the state's libraries continue to be vibrant community resources," Schockman said. "As libraries become, in a real sense, the front door to the digital age, it's vital that every Californian have access to this essential, shared repository -- wherever he or she resides."
"The Woodbury community is thrilled to have one of our own in such a key post within the information economy," said Luis Maria R. Calingo, Ph.D. "Throughout his academic and professional career, Eric Schockman has not only studied leadership, he has exemplified it, as this appointment attests."
In addition to his posts at Woodbury, Dr. Schockman is adjunct Associate Professor at the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California. He is President and founder of the Global Hunger Foundation, dedicated to helping women in the developing world break the chains of poverty by funding projects designed to provide sustainable development and organic farming. Dr. Schockman served as chairman of the National Anti-Hunger Organization and was a member of both the National Interfaith Hunger director's committee and the Alliance to End Hunger. He was on the founding board of directors of the Global Food Banking Network. In addition, he served as President and CEO of an international anti-hunger agency for more than a decade, pumping both needed public policy focus and funding into the field.
Dr. Schockman was appointed to the California Postsecondary Education Commission by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2007 and served as its last chair. He has also served on the Little Hoover Commission, a bipartisan, independent body whose function is to promote efficiency, effectiveness and economy in state programs. He was active in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone, West Africa, and taught agricultural and sustainable development.
Dr. Schockman brings more than 25 years of academic and leadership experience to the board. He was former Associate Professor and Associate Dean at the University of Southern California, taught in the Masters of Public Administration program at CSUN, and ran both the Edmund G. "Pat" Brown Institute for Public Affairs at CSULA and the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at USC. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of California, Riverside.
He has written several books and edited numerous articles on politics in California, the nation and international affairs, and presented on panels on these same topics. Dr. Schockman speaks before elected officials, professional and community organizations across the country and is frequently quoted in the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News, CNN, NPR and other national publications and electronic media.
