Women of Distinction Magazine Selects Leni Preston as a Distinguished Professional in Her Field

- Burlington-South Burlington, VT (1888PressRelease) February 10, 2016 - Leni Preston, Founder and Director of PTSD Resource Center of VT, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Leni Preston will be featured in the upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2015/2016.
Developing PTSD in 1992 after being sexually assaulted, Leni Preston didn't seek professional help for nine years. Ten years after learning how to manage her symptoms, a second trauma in 2011 set her back. Because she wasn't a veteran of the US, there was nowhere for her to seek support; she had no choice but to see a private counselor for her disorder. Frustrated, she formed an educated based 501(c)3 non-profit, PTSD Resource Center of VT as a way for other to get help, regardless of the cause.
"We offer peer support groups, basic awareness classes, presentations to businesses, organizations, and groups requesting talks about PTSD, and go into the community and set up information booths," Ms. Preston said, who has had PTSD for over 23 years. "I started my organization to take the trauma that caused me to develop PTSD and use it to help others and let them know they are not alone. I wanted them to have access to something I didn't and to educate the public about the reality of PTSD and dispel the myths."
Ms. Preston has created and posted several videos on YouTube, one of which is called 'What It's Like to Have PTSD', which has had close to 90,000 hits. A second video, 'Police PTSD', has had nearly 19,000 hits. PTSD Resource Center of VT is currently working on a proposal to create a PTSD Service Dog Training Division that would offer free service dogs to veterans, first responders, and civilians within the next few years.
Ms. Preston has worked as a Special Officer (Part-Time Police Officer), in security, as an Adjunct Professor for The College of St. Joseph, and did an internship for an organization that worked with survivors of domestic and sexual violence. She's published two books, both of which have had main characters who have PTSD, 'Penalty Box' and 'Insight'. Fifty percent of the royalties of 'Insight' go back into her organization.
