Wine industry veteran earns Cava Expert certification
The Cava Academy of the D.O. Cava Regulatory Board in Spain has awarded Charlie Leary, PhD, certification as a Cava Expert.
- (1888PressRelease) March 12, 2022 - Wine writer and sommelier Charlie Leary has earned qualification as a Cava Expert from the Cava Academy of the Regulatory Board of D.O. Cava in Barcelona, Spain. This certification came after writing a thesis on the de-seasonalization of Cava sales and completing the extensive coursework required for becoming a Cava Educator. The Academy made the announcement on March 11.
Cava is the popular Spanish sparkling wine exported worldwide.
Leary is based in Panama City, Panama, and has written about wine for a variety of publications including Sommelier Business, the Halifax Chronicle-Herald, and Sommeliers Choice Awards. He also regularly contributes wine-related content to the website of an award-winning US wine & spirits retailer.
The Cava Expert certification requires writing a thesis based on original research related to Cava, the popular Spanish sparkling wine. The thesis was evaluated by the Cava Academy Committee, made up of representatives of the Cava Regulatory Board and an external consultant. It was evaluated according to the following criteria:
Creativity of the piece of work 25%.
Objectivity and clarity of the writing 25%.
Degree of representation of the subject matter, complemented with data contribution 25%.
Achievable with high implementation power 25%
Leary's 27-page thesis is titled, "Augmenting non-seasonalized D.O. Cava wine sales through increased research and redistribution of marketing priorities: A bibliometric and marketing message analysis." He completed Cava Educator certification in February, 2022.
Leary has developed and managed restaurant wine programs in the United States, Canada, France, Costa Rica, and Panama since 1995, including the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence-winning program at Trout Point Lodge of Nova Scotia. He also earned the Certified Sherry Wine Specialist certification with high honors from the Wine Scholar Guild, the Argentina Wine Specialist certification from Napa Valley Wine Academy, the Hospitality Beverage Specialist certification from the Society of Wine Educators, the Rioja Wine Diploma for Trade & Distribution, as well as the Aragon Wine Expert Diploma. His experience extends to viticulture. He started an IGP vineyard in Andalusia, Spain in 2017.
The main objectives of the Cava Academy are to spread knowledge of Cava around the world and to train wine professionals as well as Cava lovers. The program under the expert guidance of Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers. It is an official initiative of the Consejo Regulador D.O. Cava.
