Willig, Williams & Davidson Partner Irwin W. Aronson to Chair IOLTA Board
Supreme Court of Pennsylvania selects Harrisburg union-side attorney to chair Pennsylvania Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts board.
- (1888PressRelease) September 10, 2015 - The Philadelphia labor, employment and workers' compensation firm of Willig, Williams & Davidson is pleased to announce that partner Irwin W. Aronson, of the firm's Harrisburg office, has been appointed to chair the Pennsylvania Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts Board (IOLTA) beginning Sept. 1, 2015.
Pennsylvania's IOLTA program enables lawyers to raise millions of dollars to help provide legal services to the poor and disadvantaged. The IOLTA board then makes grants to nonprofit organizations, law school clinical programs, and projects that provide civil legal services free of charge to the poor and disadvantaged.
"We are extremely proud that the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania has chosen Irwin to chair the IOLTA board," said Managing Partner Deborah R. Willig. "Ensuring that all people have equal access to justice, regardless of their socio-economic resources, is important to all of us at Willig, Williams & Davidson."
Funds for the IOLTA program come from interest earned on trust accounts. Clients and others frequently transfer moneys to attorneys to hold. Large sums or those to be held for an extended period of time generally are invested for the benefit of the client, but when sums are small, or short-term, that kind of investment is impractical. Pennsylvania rules require attorneys to deposit nominal and short-term funds in interest-bearing IOLTA accounts. The banks then transfer the interest earned on IOLTA accounts to the Pennsylvania IOLTA Board.
"The money raised from these trust accounts ensures that homeless veterans, neglected children and victims of domestic violence have access to the legal advocates they need to find stable housing, facilitate adoption, and secure protection from abuse, and so much more," said Aronson, who previously served as IOLTA's treasurer. "Chairing the IOLTA board gives me the opportunity to continue to support the vital legal aid programs that are making a difference in the lives of people all across Pennsylvania."
A respected appellate advocate, Aronson concentrates his practice in labor and employment law, employee benefit matters, governmental affairs and legislative drafting and analysis. He possesses a broad range of experience in litigation and legislative matters ranging from fair labor standards and unemployment compensation, to housing and urban development, to elections and voting rights.
Aronson has been consistently selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® in the fields of Labor, Employment and Employee Benefits Law and has been recognized as a LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell AV® Peer Review Rated attorney since 1987. He also has been named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer by Thomson Reuters, an honor awarded to no more than the top 5 percent of the state's 50,000 lawyers.
