  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) May 19, 2015 - Williamsburg Northside School is serving as the venue for "The Wonder of Learning: The Hundred Languages of Children"; an exhibit of the innovative educational programs in Reggio Emilia schools in Italy. The Brooklyn school is located at 299 North 7th Street where the exhibit is being held from January 15, 2015 to May 15, 2015. The exhibit is open to the general public on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 6 pm.

In the town Reggio Emilia, an educational approach was pioneered after World War II by Loris Malaguzzi. The Reggio Emilia approach to preschool and elementary education is based on recognizing children as active participants of the learning process. In Reggio Emilia schools, the ideas, thoughts and interests of each child are taken into account to give shape to the emergent curriculum that is individualized to cater to each child's unique personality.

"The Wonder of Learning…" NYC exhibit is being conducted in collaboration with Reggio Children and the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance (NAREA). The 7,000 square-foot exhibit presents the work of children and teachers of Reggio Emilia schools. The Reggio Emilia exhibit is composed of six sections and a variety of media including videos, audio recordings, booklets, three-dimensional objects and children's work.

The Reggio Emilia schools' exhibit has been touring the world since 1987 including the United States, Europe, Canada, Asia and Mexico. It has inspired educators, artists, government and business leaders and communities worldwide to recognize the potential of each child to be an active and competent contributor to their learning and development.

Williamsburg Northside Schools in NYC including the lower school that the exhibit is being hosted at as well as the Williamsburg Northside daycare and preschool, are a group of educational establishments inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. Williamsburg Northside Schools have an emergent curriculum that incorporates "the hundred languages of children" which are the various media through which children express themselves such as music, art, movement, storytelling, dramatic play and construction. Williamsburg Northside Schools also rely heavily on integrated project work on developmentally-appropriate topics to foster a child's learning and growth.

Reggio Emilia schools have inspired several preschools and schools worldwide including Williamsburg Northside Schools in NYC to adopt a more child-centric approach to education. The focus is now shifting from offering children a predetermined curriculum to letting them discover knowledge for themselves. To know more about Reggio Emilia NYC visit: http://www.willnorth.org/about_us/reggio_emilia_approach/
