Washington and author Adam Shepard, both native North Carolinians, will serve as its fall 2013 speaker series presenters in Kenan Recital Hall. Presented by Duke Energy, Washington and Shepard's speeches will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 27 and Monday, Sept. 16, respectively. Shepard's novel Scratch Beginnings has been selected as the 2013-2014 summer reading for all incoming first-year students as well as the greater campus community for its alignment with the university's quality enhancement plan and ethical decision making. His presentation titled "Scratch Beginnings: Me, $25 and the Search for the American Dream," will be held from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sept 17. Shepard will discuss with attendees his journey of finding a job, saving $2,500, purchasing a vehicle and furnishing an apartment in just one year.
