White Ribbon Day Commemorated with Open House in Clearwater
November 25th’s White Ribbon Day is an international day to raise awareness of violence against women.
- Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) November 19, 2023 - United for Human Rights of Florida announced that their Center in downtown Clearwater will house an open house to commemorate White Ribbon Day on Saturday, November 25th from 2:00pm until 6:00pm. White Ribbon Day was formed by a group of pro-feminist men in London, Ontario in 1991.
“Their work centers around the prevention of gender-based violence, including educating and mentoring young men,” said Ella Rouelle a representative of United for Human Rights (UHR) of Florida. “Education in basic human rights is central to what we do here at UHR and we want the general public to be aware that they have rights – including the right not to be tortured and the right to life.”
An October 2023 report by the Violence Prevention Center noted that over the past 25 years, 92% of women who were victims of murder knew their killers.
“Raising awareness about human rights and educating young people on what their rights – and the rights of others are – can have a profound impact on how people view each other,” said Rouelle. “Our open house features a multi-media presentation on the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the award-winning documentary The Story of Human Rights.”
UHR’s educational program is based on the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document, which was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in Paris on December 10th, 1948, has been translated into 500 languages and is considered an international standard of human rights. UHR is sponsored by the Church of Scientology and Scientologists from around the world.
Lisa Mansell from the Public Affairs Department for the Church of Scientology said, “Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard stated that ‘Human Rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream. To that end, we are honored to support UHR as they advocate for human rights through education.”
The UHR Center is located at 29 N. Fort Harrison Ave. in downtown Clearwater. For more information, please call 727-467-6960.
About United for Human Rights
The aims of United for Human Rights (UHR), and its program for young people, Youth for Human Rights (YHR) are twofold: Teach young people their inalienable rights, thus significantly increasing awareness in a single generation; and petition governments to implement and enforce the provisions of the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the world’s preeminent human rights document, and mandate human rights education in schools.
UHR and YHR support myriad activities and provide educational resources in 17 languages that advance this initiative at all levels of society. These programs are widely embraced and used by schools and churches, civic and community groups, human rights organizations, police forces, armed forces, and governmental organizations worldwide.
In its longstanding tradition of championing the cause of freedom for all, the Church of Scientology and its members seek remedies through sponsorship of UHR and YHR.
