(1888PressRelease) December 14, 2011 - MIAMI, FL - The white metals react somewhat differently to gold and, while gold has been slipping due to a rush to liquidate and a stronger dollar, there has been comparatively little movement in silver, platinum and palladium. Silver is down, but only by 5 cents, platinum is holding steady and palladium, which made huge gains last week, is still looking good, up one dollar on the day. Their dependence on the strength of the industrial sector makes these metals react less to other market pressures, compared with gold. Investment demand is crucial to the price of gold whereas the white metals do see some investment demand but rely more heavily on industrial demand.
It seems that demand from industry continues to be high, despite the approaching year-end and the economic crisis in Europe. November saw a rise in the sales of new cars, increasing the demand for platinum and palladium, both of which are also experiencing some supply challenges. Both metals are extremely rare and there have been labor problems and increased production costs in South Africa while supplies of palladium from Russia are dwindling. Additionally, the jewelry industry will be taking advantage of platinum's unusually low price, relative to gold, and substituting platinum for gold in new jewelry designs. Platinum traditionally trades at a premium to gold, so platinum jewelry could well represent a bargain for buyers.
