West Coast Aerial Photography President Awarded at Pictures of the Year International Annual Contest
West Coast Aerial Photography President's B-2 image receives award at the 67th Annual Pictures of the Year International Competition.
- Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) July 03, 2010 - West Coast Aerial Photography, Inc., today announced that its president, Mark Holtzman, has received an Award of Excellence at the 2010 sixty-seventh Annual Pictures of the Year International (POYi) Competition, for his B-2 flying over the Rose Bowl image, now entitled "Bombs Away." The two-day POYi Education & Awards Program symposium took place at The Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles, where the POYi 80-print exhibition "The Year" will be on display through October 10, 2010.
"POYi has enabled me to meet some of the best photographers in photojournalism from all over the world," explains Mr. Holtzman. "It has been an incredibly educational experience."
Dating back to 1944, the Picture of the Year annual contest began as an annual print exhibition sponsored by the Missouri School of Journalism as a way "to pay tribute to those press photographers and newspapers which, despite tremendous war-time difficulties, are doing a splendid job; to provide an opportunity for photographers of the nation to meet in open competition; and to compile and preserve...a collection of the best in current, home-front press pictures," states the POYi official website. As time passed and the number of submissions grew into the tens of thousands, Picture of the Year became an international organization, officially becoming Picture of the Year International in 2001.
POYi is "one of the oldest, largest and most highly respected photojournalism contests in the world," according to the POYi website. Other prestigious annual contests include the World Press Photo and the Pulitzer Prize.
Mr. Holtzman received an award in the 2010 World Press Photo annual contest for his B-2 image and attended the World Press Photo award ceremony in Amsterdam in Spring 2010 where his B-2 image placed second in the Sports Features category.
