- San Francisco, CA (1888PressRelease) June 28, 2017 - After a total overhaul by designer Ken Fulk, Wayfare Tavern’s new penthouse lounge, The Sequoia, is ready to party. Located on the fourth floor of a 1907 building in San Francisco's Financial District, The Sequoia is accessed through a secret entrance—marked only by a small plaque—alongside the Tyler Florence restaurant. The elevator takes you to another era, a glowing lounge with leopard carpeting, green velvet banquettes, exposed brick walls and a vaulted sky light with a straight shot of the Trans America building towering overhead.
For the main room, a bar was topped with black marble and custom game tables were painted in a color combination of chrome green and near-black forest green to set off the exposed original brick. Wanting to reference the optimism and prosperity at the height of the Art Deco era, the team mined a combination of industrial designs, the lithographs of Jules Cheret and old California tourism posters for inspiration. Throwback moments come from a collection of vintage photographs and antique silk-fringed light fixtures. Originally built as a bank, Fulk and the restaurateurs wanted to celebrate that heritage, so the building's top-floor vault was transformed into a glowing whiskey vault with a cognac-colored leather banquette and the original metal walls hand-painted in a malachite pattern. "We knew this was going to be the most coveted seat in the house," says Fulk "There's something undeniably sexy about lounging in a glowing bank vault filled with whiskey bottles."
