Washington County Playhouse Discovers Hidden Wing at New York's Sing Sing Prison That Pampers Every Inmate's Whim
World premiere of The Sing Sing Suite, a new comedy by award-winning playwright Jay Huling, opens May 9 at the Washington County Playhouse and runs through June 22.
- Hagerstown-Martinsburg, MD-WV (1888PressRelease) May 01, 2014 - According to playwright Jay Huling, the Sing Sing Correctional Facility, a New York landmark and active maximum security prison, once had a secret cell block where inmates received massages, manicures, and were even treated to conjugal visits from the prison's warden.
The world premiere of Huling's comedy THE SING SING SUITE is May 9 at the Washington County Playhouse Dinner Theater in Hagerstown. The play is a fictional romp of Sing Sing's sordid past and runs Friday and Saturday evenings through June 21. The show closes on June 22 with a Sunday matinee.
"I was absolutely amazed to learn Sing Sing's museum curators knew nothing of the hilarious and embarrassing facts I've uncovered about its history," said Huling. "To my knowledge, they have refused all comment."
Jeff Czerbinski, owner of the Washington County Playhouse, said he knew Huling was joking from the first page of his script. He's produced plays by Huling before, and he said he wanted to produce the world premiere of THE SING SING SUITE because it's the most original script he's found in years.
"You just don't find anyone writing this kind of laugh-out-loud comedy anymore," said Czerbinski. "For us, a Huling play is the only sure thing in theatre. Our audiences keep coming back to see what he'll dream up next."
Huling was coy when asked about his inspiration for writing the play, and referred to a plot point in his script.
"Like most people, I had heard the legend of Hunk Shaughnessy and how he married 63 women at the same time," said Huling. "But I certainly wasn't expecting to learn he lived at Sing Sing of his own accord for seven years after he was paroled."
Huling, who is perhaps best known for his absurd comedy ELVIS OF NAZARETH, plans to travel to Hagerstown to watch some of the Playhouse's performances during the run.
