The PQRI system offers incentive payments to physicians who satisfactorily report data on quality measures for services provided to Medicare patients. These measures are evaluated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and they are subject to change for every reporting period. Participating physicians must report on at least three quality measures, and must report on at least 80% of cases for which that measure is reportable. They must then submit their quality measures to either CMS on their Medicare Part B claims, a qualified PQRI registry, or CMS via an electronic health record (EHR) system. Qualifying providers who submit through these channels will then receive a PQRI incentive payment equal to 2.0% of their total estimated Medicare Part B Physician Fee Schedule (PFS).
The goal of the PQRI system is to enhance the quality of documentation, and as a result, improve the quality of care among practices. This program is beneficial for physicians because it aids in the technological advancement and organization of their practices, while also providing monetary incentives. There is also a large benefit for patients, who receive superior treatment through the utilization of this improved recordkeeping system.
