- Hagerstown-Martinsburg, MD-WV (1888PressRelease) August 06, 2014 - The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) is seeking volunteers to participate in three workdays on August 7, 8, and 9, at the Max Patch open area along the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) in North Carolina. The project offers the opportunity to visit and help maintain one of the most scenic spots on the Trail, as well as learn about various A.T. conservation initiatives. Carpooling to Max Patch is available from Asheville, and those interested should meet at 8 a.m. each day at the ATC's Southern Regional Office parking lot, located in the U.S. Forest Service building at 160 Zillicoa St. in Asheville, NC. Those who carpool will return to Asheville by 5 p.m.
The primary goal of the work project, which is funded by a National Forest Foundation grant, is to improve vistas from the Max Patch open area, one of the most celebrated open areas on the A.T. The work will expand views of the surrounding mountains as well as promote grasses and herbaceous plant cover.
"Come join the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and help maintain the beauty of this popular stretch of the Appalachian Trail," said Morgan Sommerville, ATC regional director. "Volunteers are crucial to our trail management efforts, and we would love to have your support during these workdays."
During the workdays, participants will clear small trees and woody shrubs with chainsaws, bladed trimmers, and hand tools. U.S. Forest Service chainsaw certification is required to operate chainsaws, but non-certified volunteers are also needed to mow smaller stems and pile brush.
The ATC will provide all equipment needed for the workdays, including personal protective equipment. Volunteers are asked to wear long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy hiking boots or shoes. Participants should also bring a lunch and at least two quarts of water.
