  • Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) September 04, 2014 - With hurricane season in full swing, the Church of Scientology of Tampa's Volunteer Minister Director has announced that she is looking for new members for the Volunteer Minister Program.

Judy Fagerman, who has headed this group since 2001, is inviting members of the community to come to the Church of Scientology of Tampa to receive free training in skills ranging from organization to tutoring to handling the confusion of a disaster site.

"I think it is human nature to help others," said Ms. Fagerman, "but a lot of the time, most of us don't know what to do. Before becoming a Volunteer Minister, I could listen or sympathize, and that helped a little bit. But I always thought more could be done and when I found the Volunteer Minister Program, I found effective tools that enable one to be more effective in helping others."

The program consists of 18 lessons and is based on the work of L. Ron Hubbard. One does not need to be a Scientologists to be trained as a Volunteer Minister.

"During 9/11, the Volunteer Ministers were the only relief organization, other than the Red Cross, who was allowed into the site to assist law enforcement and the Fire Department," said Ms. Fagerman. "Whole groups of community volunteers came to the New York Church of Scientology and were rapidly trained as Volunteer Ministers - when it comes to events like that, the more skilled help that is available the better."

The Tampa Bay Volunteer Ministers have volunteered at disaster sites all over the world, including 9/11, the earthquake in Haiti, the tsunamis in India and Indonesia and closer to home with hurricanes like Katrina and Charlie. The Tampa Bay Volunteer Ministers are members of the Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco County Organizations Active in Disaster along with the Red Cross, United Way, the Department of Health, Citizens' Corps and Metropolitan Ministries.

Yet Ms. Fagerman is quick to point out that Disaster Relief is just one area where Volunteer Ministers can help. "The tools in the Volunteer Minister Handbook include how to teach a child to study, how to help someone cope with the ups and downs of life, how to help someone get past an upset and even how to help a married couple that are having difficulties. These are every-day disasters that people can learn to avert or mitigate the damage of. It is very simple and anyone, if they can read, can be trained."

The Tampa Church of Scientology is located at 1300 East 8th Ave. in Ybor City and is open seven days a week. Training is also available at the Plant City and St. Petersburg Life Improvement Centers. (Please call for hours of operation).

Anyone who is interested in learning more about the program is encouraged to contact Ms. Fagerman at 813-872-0722. People can also go directly to the Volunteer Ministers website and take the courses on line for free at www.volunteerministers.org.
