Volunteer in rural Nepal with Village Nepal Volunteer and make an impact
Village Nepal Volunteer aims to promote the voluntarism to benefit the rural community of Nepal as well as for cross cultural learning.
- (1888PressRelease) August 16, 2010 - Village Nepal Volunteer (VNV) program in Okhaldhunga district was created by Children for Green New Nepal (CGNN) with the help of an inspired, independent volunteer/traveler with the goal of providing the opportunity for service learning and intercultural immersion to international volunteers in Nepal. VNV places volunteers in the remote parts of the Okhaldhunga district in eastern Nepal, not far from Mount Everest and other Himalayan peaks. The VNV coordinators work with volunteers to provide benefits to the local community and to ensure a rewarding and unforgettable experience for the volunteers. Some areas for potential volunteer work include teacher training, English Language instruction, other school-based development, environmental education, waste management and sanitation, conducting health workshops, assisting at the local hospital, involvement in youth group activities, and creating informational posters and murals.
Essential to VNV's success, volunteers will work closely with community members to create and develop beneficial and sustainable programs and activities. VNV representatives will consult with volunteers prior to their departure as well as after their arrival in Nepal, to develop an individualized volunteer experience. CGNN will work closely with the volunteer throughout their village stay to ensure the individuals comfort and progress. We pride ourselves on our ability to tailor your volunteer experience, and allowing our volunteers the freedom to construct programs and activities true to their experience and passions.
Whether you work in a school, clinic, in the community, or simply assist with day to day tasks, the friendships that develops enriches the lives of both the volunteers and the local people.
VNV's volunteer program is the best and most comprehensive of it's kind in Nepal. While living in a remote Nepali village, volunteers are safe, secure, and well looked after. We provide Nepali culture training to all volunteers which consists of daily language training as well as rules and customs that can be followed to easily blend with the community.
Volunteers have the opportunity to lend a hand in the following areas:
Education-
Many children in Okhaldunga do attend government schools, whether they live close by or a 2 hour walk each way. The children are motivated, as well as the teachers, but lack of supplies and instruction make the percentage that see their way to grade 10 very low. Volunteer teachers will be placed in the classroom providing necessary English instruction, self motivated and initiated lessons on the subject of their choice, arts and crafts, and environmental awareness lessons and activities.
For volunteers that specialize in ESL education, the teachers and principles of the schools voiced an interest in learning how to better teach English to their students. Because English is an internationally spoken language, we want to provide the teachers with proper pronunciation, intonation, and grammer required to speak and write in English as well as instruct their students.
Healthcare-
Volunteers interested in working in healthcare must have a nursing, doctor, or first-aid back round. Individuals will be placed at the local hospital and clinic working with medical professionals assisting with care and procedures as necessary. Volunteers may be able to bring knowledge and resources otherwise absent to this rural district. Another possibility may be educating the school children as well as local people on issues such as sanitation, hygeine, basic first aid. and CPR, setting up programs in the community to help local people care for themselves as necessary.
Environmental awareness-
This is your opportunity to educate the community on such issues as deforestation, proper waste management, compost construction and how to maintain and sustain it, and recycling. Volunteers will work directly with district officials, youth groups, and schools to set up programs and activities, create educational posters and murals, and facilitate the community with the necessary skills and education to make their environment a more pleasant one.
Infrastructure planning and development
To the engineering professional, this village needs man power as well as instruction when it comes to building roads, installing and maintaining solar panels for lights and electricity, and proper plumming and waste relief. For the volunteer who is just good with their hands, there is opportunity to build desks and chairs for the schools, paint and maintain existing classrooms, dig toilet pits, and assist with renovations of homes and schools.
We encourage volunteers to have motivation as well as initiative. When volunteering with VNV, the individual has the freedom to create and implement programs of their choice and use their own good judgement and discretion to generate a positive plan to make the most of your time in Okhaldhunga. The one thing that VNV emphasizes is that we are here to work WITH the community. Our goal is to produce programs that inspire the community and are easily sustainable once the volunteer returns home.
It should be noted that volunteering with this program is not a fit for everyone. It is not designed to provide participants with a highly structured program that guarantees 8 hours of volunteer work each day. Instead, those may find themselves participating in different activities each day, and creating their own schedule that also suits the area of the community they are working with. Volunteers are encouraged to spend their down time immersing themselves in the community, getting to know the people with whom they are working with.
The volunteers who tend to have the most fulfilling experiences are those who:
-are highly motivated and require limited direction or instruction
-are flexible and willing to pitch in where ever necessary
-truly understand that the pace of life is slower than what they may be used to
-realizing that making a difference may be as simple as making some one smile
