Voices of Christian Thought Speaker Series Returns to HIU for Fall 2011
The newest installment of Hope International University's Speaker Series: Voices of Christian Thought (VOCT) will feature four diverse speakers for Fall the 2011 semester.
- (1888PressRelease) September 01, 2011 - Fullerton, CA - Hope International University (HIU) is pleased to announce the second year of the Speaker Series: Voices of Christian Thought (VOCT). VOCT for Fall 2011 presents four speakers over the course of the fall semester: Rachel Held Evans, Stanley Hauerwas, Todd Hunter, and Rick Rusaw. The series, which features speakers from a variety of backgrounds and occupations, debuted last year and was a hit among students, staff, faculty, and the community as they were presented with a new and dynamic learning experience.
Pastor Hunter will start off VOCT for the Fall on September 8. He is the founding pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Costa Mesa, CA and an adjunct professor for Fuller Seminary, Wheaton College, Western Seminary, and George Fox University, where he received a Doctorate of Ministry. Hunter is a published author and founder of the organizations Churches for the Sake of Others and Three is Enough.
Evans, an author and skeptic, will speak on September 15. She earned her B.A. in English Literature from Bryan College and previously worked for The Herald News in Dayton, TN. A Dayton native, Evans published her first book in 2006, a spiritual narrative entitled Evolving in Monkey Town about growing up in the city famous for the Scopes Monkey Trial.
Pastor Rusaw is scheduled to speak on October 13. He has been the lead pastor at LifeBridge Christian Church in Longmont, CO for the past 20 years and holds two degrees from Cincinnati Bible College and Seminary. He is the co-founder of the Externally Focused Network and co-author of three books related to the externally focused movement. In addition to serving on the board of directors at HIU, he is also on the board for Christian Network International and serves as a host on Worship Network.
Professor Hauerwas will finish out the year on December 6. A professor at Duke Divinity School and Duke University School of Law, Hauerwas was named "America's Best Theologian" by Time Magazine in 2001. Known for examining and integrating multiple disciplines into his works, Hauerwas' book, A Community of Character: Toward a Constructive Christian Social Ethic, was selected as one of the 20th century's most important books on religion.
As a part of VOCT, each year speakers will share their unique perspectives of ministry and Christianity to the HIU community during the weekly chapel service, Thursdays from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m., as well as during select class periods. Last year's featured speakers were social activist Shane Claiborne, Christian theologian and author Dan Kimball, and distinguished professor and speaker Dallas Willard.
