Violated Online Author Steven Wyer Warns Readers of Widespread Tracking by Social Media Giant
According to Steven Wyer, author of the book Violated Online, USA Today has reported Facebook officials are admitting that the company has constructed a running log of the web pages visited by some 800 million members during the past 90 days.
- Jackson, TN (1888PressRelease) November 18, 2011 - The social network also closely tracks where millions more non-members go on the Web after they have visited a Facebook page for any reason.
The social media giant's public acknowledgement has touched off a barrage of questions from privacy advocates around the world, including Steven Wyer. "People need to realize that this is the new reality," says Wyer. "We readily volunteer all of this information; birth dates, email addresses, and phone numbers. We really shouldn't be surprised that this data is being used by a multi-billion dollar company to make more money."
Maybe so, but do they have our permission? According to Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass), "Facebook could be tracking users without knowledge or permission, which could be an unfair or deceptive business practice." Markey has co-sponsored a bill with Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) to limit online tracking of children. Facebook recently applied for a U.S. patent for technology that includes a method to correlate tracking data with advertisements. Markey and Barton reportedly sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's 27-year-old CEO, asking him to explain why he wants that patent and asked him to respond by December 1st.
"I'll also be waiting to hear Zuckerberg's response," says Wyer. "But what I'd really like to see is people putting fewer details about their lives, history, opinions, family, and businesses on social media sites. You know that little box we all check saying "I Accept" without actually reading what we're accepting? You'd be horrified to know what you just agreed to."
Steven Wyer's book, Violated Online, is published by Dunham Books. It includes short stories of real-life scenarios of online reputation killers and over fifty actions that anyone can take to protect online privacy. Wyer says that there doesn't have to be negative information online in order to benefit from reviewing search results and improving information that is potentially incorrect, incomplete or embarrassing. Employment and promotion opportunities, admissions evaluations, credit relationships and social relationships can all be impacted.
