Vietnam Proposes Changes to Certain Food Contact Material and Article Requirements

  • (1888PressRelease) October 12, 2017 - Vietnam has issued a proposal to change the regulations relating to food contact plastics and food contact containers for some dairy products. The proposal, circulated by the World Trade Organization (WTO) on September 11, 2017, defined specifications for several food contact products, including:
    • Food contact plastics made from:
    1. Phenol, Melamine and Urea
    2. Formaldehyde
    3. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
    4. Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP)
    5. Polystyrene (PS)
    6. Polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC)
    7. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
    8. Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA)
    9. Nylon (Polyamide, PA)
    10. Polymethylpentene (PMP)
    11. Polycarbonate (PC)
    12. Polylactic acid (PLA)
    13. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)
    14. Synthetic resins other than those in 1 to 13
    • Food contact containers for certain dairy products, such as milk and milk powder

    This draft technical regulation, QCVN 12-1:2017/BYT, conforms to Vietnam Food Sanitation Law 2010 (Law Number 55/2010/QH12 of June 28, 2010) and includes information on preparative and analytical procedures for meeting the specifications in each of the listed food contact plastics and/or food dairy containers.

    The WTO circulated the proposal in document number 17-4767 and it includes a projected adoption date of December 1, 2017. If adopted, it could mean the repeal of QCVN 12-1:2011/BYT – ‘National technical regulation on safety and hygiene for synthetic resin implement, container and packaging in direct contact with foods’, with an entry into force date of mid-2018.
