Now operating out of Chattanooga, TN, Victoria has branched out to support pressing humanitarian needs in America and across seas including: increased quality in working conditions, women's rights, and hunger relief. Using her retail store (Victoria Design Studio), her entity as an artist, and partnerships with local organizations, Victoria York is employing networks of individuals in fair trade conditions and raising awareness through her newly found passion for photography.
Chattanooga, TN, June 15th, 2011 - Artist Victoria York announces her campaign for a new photographic art project actuated by her recent trip to Kenya. "The Gates of Niarobi" features stunning images from varying Kenyan communities. Whether urban, suburban, or rustic... upper, middle, or lower class, these gates stand as the ambassadors for the people. Photographing the faces of these communities as entry ways into their guarded residences, Victoria York has unmasked an unconventional statement of Kenyan culture.
"I traveled to Kenya to network with artisans, volunteer with charity networks, and learn of the needs of the people. Every place we journeyed, before ever seeing the people within the community, I was greeted by these gates. I quickly became overwhelmed by the beauty and symbolism held in these entrances, and began planning a photographic outlet for this newly discovered passion." Explained Victoria.
Beginning with a photographic journal, Victoria aims to spread awareness concerning the living and working conditions of this nation while reaching the hearts and minds of fellow artistic souls. Painting an impressionist portrait of the native Kenyan experience, Victoria hopes to continue this endeavor through several different outlets. "Eventually we hope to adapt the stills into a touring canvas art exhibit. Incorporating hand-touched elements, these pieces will subtly increase the artistic acuity of each image captured in the photo book." Victoria Continued.
Victoria York's "The Gates of Niarobi" project has recently been accepted onto Kickstarter, (www.kickstarter.com) a group funding website that helps artists meet their financial goals. Supporters are able to pledge at different levels in exchange for a reward. Rewards range from personalized post cards featuring gate photos to a mention in the book credits and a copy of the coffee table photography book.
