Ventura County Organizations Partner to Provide Special Book Donation
"The Everyday Extra Ordinary Cookie Company" honors author's childhood friend, a pediatric cancer survivor
- Ventura, CA (1888PressRelease) December 29, 2023 - Through the generosity of local author Heather Manheim, the Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD), Health Care Foundation for Ventura County (HCFVC) and Ventura County Health Care Agency’s (VCHCA) Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic was presented with an opportunity to receive a very special book donation for pediatric patients receiving care at Ventura County Medical Center.
Manheim wrote, “The Everyday Extra Ordinary Cookie Company” to honor her childhood friend, a pediatric cancer survivor, from the lens of how she wished it would have been.
When Crystal Stratton from Ventura County Fire Department learned about Manheim’s cancer book, she worked with Fire Chief Dustin Gardner to connect with local nonprofit, HCFVC to help facilitate a book donation to pediatric patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation at Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disease (CCCBD) at Ventura County Medical Center.
VCFD funded the purchase of Manheim’s books through prize money won at this year’s Ventura County Fair, through its community education booth. The blue-ribbon booth highlighted the importance of quick responses during medical emergencies and the ways individuals can contribute by acquiring knowledge in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and bleeding control.
“We support a healthy community,” Fire Chief Dustin Gardner said. “At the fair, we were able to teach people how they can help save lives. Now, the prize money from that effort will help comfort children who are fighting to beat cancer.”
Ventura County Health Care Agency (VCHCA) is comprised of two public hospitals, Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital, a network of primary and specialty care clinics, and Behavioral Health and Public Health Departments.
CCCBD, a joint project with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Cancer and Blood Disease Institute, is a specialty care clinic located at Ventura County Medical Center that provides state-of the-art pediatric care and consultation close to home for children and adolescents with cancer and blood diseases. CCCBD is the only pediatric cancer treatment facility for children and adolescents in Ventura County.
“Through community partnership and generosity, we are able to offer so much more to our patients and their families receiving care. We are grateful to the Ventura County Fire Department for this donation, their investment in our health care system and support of our patients,” said Barry Zimmerman, Director of the VCHCA.
