  • (1888PressRelease) December 16, 2015 - Tiruppur : As part of the on-going green initiative across Tiruppur, Vanathukkul Tiruppur meaning Tiruppur inside Forest, the members of the community have planted over 1.25 Lakh saplings in just 100 days. The massive effort was initiated with the support of 'VETRY", a NGO that is committed to preserving natural systems, as a homage to the late President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

This green success of Tiruppur was celebrated at a special function today in the city. Thiru M S Anandan, the Hon'ble Minister for Forest, Government of Tamil Nadu graced the occasion along with key Government officials and who's who of the town.

The industrialists of Tiruppur have contributed Rs 6 crore towards a corpus fund that will be used for the protection and watering of the planted saplings for the next two years. In fact, this plantation movement has caught on amongst schools, colleges and industries, who have together taken a pledge to create a 'green cover' for the region in the next five years.

Besides this, Tiruppur industrialists have undertaken another green initiative, the first of its kind globally. They have achieved the Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) in their processing units. The dyeing units of the town have installed a daily recycling capacity of about eight crore litres of water per day. This ensures saving of pumping fresh water to that extent every day for the factories. This mechanism, costing a capex of Rs 600 crore, reuses the salt water that is used for processing for dyeing purposes. Despite the Government allowing dyeing factories to discharge water of 2100 TDS hardness into the system, Tiruppur factories have installed this system, an act that speaks volumes about the community's eco-consciousness. Impressed by this commitment, the State Government is recommending this model to other countries as well.

The success story of Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu is a stellar example of how a small town can become a hub of global business activity. It is a unique example of how farmers have turned into factory owners and used fraternity capital to power their businesses. They have coupled their in-born entrepreneurial skills with hard work and commitment to the profession.

These farmers and industrialists have continued their commitment to the earth that has provided them with the resources to make Tiruppur a significant player in the global economy.

With so much manufacturing activity happening in the region, the town obviously needs a huge amount of natural resources like land and water and manmade resources like power to sustain the business.

But what sets Tiruppur apart from other booming towns is the planned sustainable development it has adopted for industry. Right thinking industrialists have come together to set off a green movement that can make a difference to the way the world lives and breathes

The knitwear capital of the world started in a small way in the 1980s as a cottage industry. Today it contributes a staggering 44 per cent of the country's knitwear exports. This, when coupled with the domestic knitwear business of almost Rs 15,000 crore, Tirupur, an eight lakh-population town takes the credit for generating almost Rs 35,000 crore business every year.

Industrialists here have ensured that every element of the environment is used in a sustainable manner. They have set up wind power generators with a total capacity of 1200 MW and recently, they supported this with a solar plant that has a current installed capacity of 65 MW, together costing Rs 7 crore /MW. What is noteworthy is that the total power consumption of the Tirupur district is only 700 MW, pointing to the fact that more than double the required quantity of energy is produced through 'green' initiatives. This iconic town has achieved a feat that several countries are yet to even start thinking about.

The Forum of Industrialists, a proactive community of Tirupur has gone all out to ensure that there's no compromise on the environment treatment just to meet their business goals. VETRI has taken up committed work on a lake at Andipalayam in Tirupur that covers about 70 acres area. It is brimming with water at the same levels for the past ten years.

    Highlights of Tiruppur's commerce achievements:
    • The total apparel exports from India has surpassed Rs One lakh crore in 2014-15 and stands at Rs 1.03 lakh crore, (US $ 16.82 billion). Out of this, the total knitwear exports was Rs 46, 801 crore, with a share of 45.43 per cent. The knitwear exports from Tiruppur have risen from US $ 3 million to US $ 3 billion in just three decades.
    • During the fiscal, the knitwear exports from Tiruppur increased to Rs 21,100 crore from Rs 18,000 crore recorded the previous year ( in 2013 - 14), showing a growth rate of 17.2 per cent in rupee terms and 15.82 per cent in foreign currency. Out of the all-India knitwear exports, Tirupur's share was 44.29 per cent.
    • Tiruppur has transformed from a small municipal administered area to a municipal corporation town.
    • The knitwear hub of the world is now the fifth largest city in Tamil Nadu. Spotting the potential growth of the city, the Government of India has included Tiruppur under the Smart Cities mission. The town also boasts of a staggering number of jobs for people. It generates about six lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities.
