- Akron, OH (1888PressRelease) September 07, 2012 - A wave of determined swimmers participated in Save the Bay's 36th Annual fundraising event. Valutrak Technology Solutions, a reputable IT solutions and managed service provider with a breadth of knowledge and expertise in information management and collaboration, supply chain, networking, security and IT Infrastructure, participated in this community project as a sponsor for second year in a row.
The swim event, which was initiated to protect, restore, and improve Narragansett Bay's conditions and overall ecological health, has been a yearly advocacy of Save the Bay foundation. The organization continues to focus its efforts to ensure that the bay is freed from the harmful effects of raw sewage and industrial toxins -- preventing it from falling back to its once detrimental state of neglect and abuse. On top of such, the organization also extends its reach to save Rhode Island's watershed and other adjacent coastal waters.
The annual swim is the organization's key fund raising initiative for the year whereby swimmers competed to bag the title as the fastest swimmer. To accurately monitor the swimmer's progress and timing as well as their safety, the organizers required a tracking device. This is where ValuTrack's contribution is realized. Dave Janelle, System Engineer of ValuTrack and an expert in barcode technology, has spent tremendous time and efforts in developing a barcode-based solution that suits Save the Bay's specifications. The bar code was used to ensure that all participating swimmers are timed accurately -- from the moment they plunged into the water until the time they exit. ValuTrack was able to meet Save the Bay's expectations by utilizing Zebra Technologies' HC100 wrist bands and printers. Each swimmer was handed out a printed, serialized, 11"x 1.25" color-coded wristband to coordinate departure times of different swim waves.
The swimmers lined up fronting Narragansett Bay to start their 1.7-mile swim. Using a mobile computer, event volunteers scanned each swimmer's wristband, keying in and capturing ID and start time information of each participant. Upon reaching the opposite side of the shoreline, swimmers were once again prompted for their wristbands. Each participant's wristband was scanned to note and log their accountability and swim times.
In his statement, Dave proudly explained, "Even after some swimmers were in the water for more than 2 hours, there were no scanning issues and no smudges with the bar coded wristbands. They performed flawlessly." Save the Bay recognized ValuTrack's contribution into making the whole event a success in terms of successfully integrating barcode technology, simplifying and enhancing the swimmer's performance and safety. Leanne Danielsen, Events Manager for Save the Bay said, "The staff at Save the Bay is all on the barcode bandwagon now!"
To conclude, the event had been a success. Four hundred fifty participants were able to complete the swim, producing a total of $305,165 funds raised, all for Save the Bay's cause.
