UST stages Cavalleria Rusticana at Opera Gala
A two-part opera gala will be staged at the Medicine Auditorium at 4:30 in the afternoon on January 26, 2011.
- (1888PressRelease) January 24, 2011 - With Thomasian artists who are faculty members, alumni performers based abroad, and students, the Quadricentennial Committee and the UST Conservatory of Music will present an exhilarating world-class musical experience to its audience in this strictly invitational event.
For the first part of the opera gala titled 'Excerpts from Operas', the excerpts will be taken from: Carmen Overture, Romeo et Juliette, Una Cosa Rara, Norma, Lakme, Die Csardasfurstin, Madam Butterfly, Don Carlo, La Gioconda, and Barber of Seville. Performing are: faculty members Rachelle Gerodias (soprano), Thea Perez Prosia (soprano), Naoimi Sison (soprano), Elisanta Cortes (soprano), Lemuel dela Cruz (tenor), Eugene de los Santos (tenor), Ronan Ferrer (tenor) and Jun Francis Jaranilla (base baritone). Alumni artists are: Abdul Canlas (tenor) is arriving from Austria, while France-based Armela Fortuna (soprano) will also come home to perform. Student performers include: Noel Azcona (baritone), Cristobal Tan (baritone), Kim Sung Hye (soprano), and Cynthia Sy (soprano).
For the second part, P. Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana will be presented. Performing are: Nenen Espina (soprano), Randy Gilongo (tenor), Andrew Fernando (tenor). Fernando is a US-based alumnus artist who will fly into the country to take part in the opera. The student performers are: Jade Riccio (soprano), and Minette Padilla (mezzo soprano).
About 80 voice students will form part of the chorus which is composed of various choral groups such as: Coro Tomasino and the Litrugikon Vocal Ensemble. The UST Symphony Orchestra will provide the musical accompaniment. Musical director and conductor is Dr. Herminigildo Ranera, artistic director is Eugene de los Santos, while Eric Cruz is production designer. The opera gala is directed by Floy Quintos.
