SGS SafeGuardS summarizes developments in the regulation of PFAS across several US states.
- (1888PressRelease) February 14, 2025 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 021.25, detailing developments in the regulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in several US states.
Substances from the PFAS family of chemicals (which includes perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS)) are commonly found in industry and consumer goods because of their water/oil/dirt/grease-resistant properties. Many have now been found to be toxic to human and environmental health.
A host of jurisdictions in the US, including but not limited to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington have implemented measures to regulate PFAS chemicals in consumer goods. However, there is no standardization in approach and variations in scope and requirements can be found in each jurisdiction.
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 021.25 features a comprehensive table highlighting key regulations across major jurisdictions since early 2025, including their scope and proposed effective dates.
Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 021.25 for more details.
