US Introduces New Mandatory Safety Standard for High Chairs
The US CPSC has approved a final rule for a mandatory safety standard for high chairs. The standard will come into effect on June 19, 2019.
- (1888PressRelease) July 07, 2018 - The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted unanimously on June 8, 2018, to approve the final rule for establishing a safety standard for high chairs used in both the home and restaurant environment.
Codified under US Federal Regulation 16 CFR 1231, the new safety standard assimilates ASTM International’s most recent voluntary standard for high chairs, ASTM F404-18, without modifications. This standard includes requirements relating to:
• Rearward stability
• Warning labels
• Passive crotch restraints and three-point restrain systems
A high chair is defined as a freestanding chair intended for use by a child up to the age of three. The seated surface should be no more than fifteen inches above the floor; elevating the child for the purposes of feeding, eating, or equivalent function.
The mandatory high chair standard will apply to manufactured and imported products and will come into effect on June 19, 2019 – twelve months after the final rule was published in the Federal Register. Stakeholders should now check their products comply with the new standard to ensure continued compliance.
