  • (1888PressRelease) December 09, 2017 - The US Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has published a statistical analysis of toy-related incidents and accidents recorded in 2016. The statistics were drawn from a variety of sources, including logs from:
    • Hospital emergency departments
    • CPSC injury and potential injury reports
    • Death records

The report showed that in 2016 the US recorded 240,000 injuries and seven deaths associated with the use of toys. These statistics do not necessarily mean use of toys was the primary cause of injury or death, merely that a toy was involved. For example, in the case of three fatal accidents involving ride on toys, two tricycles and a wagon, the children were struck by a motor vehicle while playing on the toy. In two other fatal incidence, the deaths occurred in swimming pools as the child was trying to retrieve toys. In these instances, the toy cannot be identified as the cause of the fatality.

The statistics relating to the treatment of children in emergency departments show that:
    • 96% were treated and released
    • 3% were admitted and transferred to a hospital
    • 1% were held for observation or left without seeing a doctor

The main type of injury was laceration (23%), followed by contusions and abrasions (16%), strains and sprains (11%, and fractures (11%). The statistics also show that most incidents involved the head and face (45%), arm (23%), and leg (17%).

Overall, the total number of toy-related injuries has remained relatively static since 2002.
