Urban Solar Corporation Awarded Solar Lighting Transit Contract
King County Metro selects Urban Solar for Bus Shelter Lighting Contract.
- Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, WA (1888PressRelease) June 16, 2011 - Urban Solar Corporation (USC), a leading manufacturer of solar powered light emitting diode (LED) lighting solutions, is pleased to announce they have entered into a contract for solar powered bus shelter lighting with King County Metro (KCM) of Seattle, Washington. King County Metro selected Urban Solar's PV-Shelter series solar systems for their high output LED lighting, integrated low-profile and vandal-resistant attributes.
The five-year contract between Urban Solar and the nationally-recognized transit agency couples powerful LED technology and intuitive power management with environmentally friendly solar power to enhance safety and the customer experience of transit riders in the state capitol city and surrounding area.
Metro is one of the 10 largest public bus agencies in the nation with an average weekday ridership of more than 370,000 passenger trips. Metro has 9,500 bus stops with more than 1,670 shelters spread across a large, sprawling service area.
"We selected Urban Solar as a result of their technically sound proposal and extensive solar lighting experience with transit agencies," said Dale Cummings, Senior Transit Planner with Metro. "Metro is in the process of replacing older flat shelter roofs with new, barrel roof architecture and Urban Solar addressed our issues, including offering a second solution for our older shelters."

Following a detailed RFP released by Metro in November 2010 Urban Solar responded with a custom solar lighting solution specifically tailored to exceed Metro's requirements. Combining bright white LED technology with Urban Solar's Energy Control Module, the PV-Shelter provides a comfortable waiting environment for bus riders and ensures riders will be seen by bus drivers and other motorists.
