Urban League of Greater Miami to Host Marijuana & Liberty City Summit
What does the use of marijuana mean to our community and our youth? The Marijuana and Liberty City Summit will discuss the social, health, legal, mental, and health impact on the legalization of marijuana.
- Miami, FL (1888PressRelease) April 26, 2013 - Florida is among a number of states where the legalization of marijuana is being debated. The recent debates in addition to the alarming trend of the use and sale of marijuana at just two South Florida inner city schools has prompted the Urban League of Greater Miami (ULGM) to spearhead the Marijuana & Liberty City Summit on May 18, 2013 at the Joseph Caleb Center. Pro or con, fact or fiction, the summit will assemble and educate Liberty City community stakeholders on the economic, social, health, and legal impact that the use and/or sale of marijuana, regardless of legalization, will have on Liberty City. The Summit is being presented in collaboration with the Jessie Trice Community Health Center and Concerned African Women (CAW).
"We're bringing together key stakeholders to the table to have a conversation on the current use and sale of marijuana, the impact to the community if legalized, and what it would mean for Miami's urban core," shares Dr. Fabian Thurston, Chair of the Summit and VP, Behavioral Health at the Jessie Trice Community Health Center. "The Summit is not about taking a position pro or against legalization, but more about presenting evidence-based information on the impact and prepare community partners and stakeholders should legalization be proposed."
A diversity of state and community partners are invited to the Summit to include stakeholders in the faith-based, education, legal, health, and business community. Panelists include representatives from Miami-Dade County Public School Police Drug Division, Miami-Dade Teen Court, the Liberty City police sub-station, the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the Miami-Dade Health Department. Calvina Fay, Executive Director of Drug Free America Foundation and Save Our Society From Drugs (SOS), will serve as the luncheon keynote and discuss the current status of the legalization debate and the potential societal impact should legalization be considered. The objective of these "community conversations" is so that information can be shared and hopefully formalized into a "next steps" work-plan.
The Summit is presented as a working lunch on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 9am to 3pm in Room 110 of the Joseph Caleb Center located at 5400 NW 22nd Ave, Miami. For more information and to attend the Summit, contact Andrea Walker at the ULGM at (305) 696-4450 or RSVP at urbanleaguemiami.eventbrite.com.
The Urban League of Greater Miami's (ULGM) core focus is on female head of households and their children who live within Liberty City. By focusing on women and their children, the ULGM believes that communities can be empowered and women can be equipped with the tools and resources they need to set themselves up for success and exercise their rights and assume their responsibilities as parents.
