Unprecedented Club Kaya Reunion Featuring DJ Nabs & All Star Line Up Of Atlanta Djs
Industry veteran DJ Nabs, known in the music business as Atlanta's "Hip Hop Historian" will bring together the top Atlanta deejays from Club Kaya for an unprecedented event on Friday, January 21, 2011.
- Atlanta, GA (1888PressRelease) January 18, 2011 - The reunion, which will be held at Club 595 North in Atlanta, is one of many events during DJ Nabs' Week of the GOAT, a week-long celebration for Nabs and his Capricorn friends and colleagues.
Nabs, one of the pioneers in the Southern Hip Hop movement, helped put Club Kaya on the map with his weekly "Old Skool Sunday in the Labs with Nabs". His vision was to bring his heroes, hip hop legends like Run DMC and Whodini, back into the spotlight and create an atmosphere like the house parties of the '80s. Nabs' insight and business savvy made Old Skool Sundays a weekly success, with a following of over 1000 partygoers. At the height of its success, DJ Nabs released "In The Lab With DJ Nabs-The Live Album" on Columbia Records, which was recorded live at Kaya. It featured guest artists Wyclef, Jermaine Dupri, Jagged Edge, and rap legend Kurtis Blow.
As a testament to its popularity, DJ Nabs and Club Kaya made Creative Loafing's Best of Atlanta list. "When I started Old Skool Sundays, about 80 people came out" says Nabs, "But we worked hard to create something that was different and stayed true to our vision, and people responded because it was authentic." In addition to the Old Skool theme, Nabs handpicked some of Atlanta's up and coming artists to perform at Kaya and hone their skills. Many went on to become superstars in their own right, including Ludacris, DJ Toomp, Youngbloods and Polow Da Don among others.
Now Nabs is bringing that experience back, as a one night only event with turntable superstars Kemit, Doc, Toomp, Frank Ski, Mike Swift, Cowboy, Mars, Jaycee and A&R Phillips. The evening will kick of with a special screening of Nabs' documentary, American DJ Story, which chronicles Nabs' life and the story of music's real hero, the DJ. The entire essence of Old School Sundays at Kaya was captured on film and is featured in the full length documentary of Nabs' career and life. Ortofon, known for their exceptional DJ equipment and Vinyl Preservation Academy, will sponsor the DJ battle. Fox 5's anchorman and hip hop aficionado Mark Haynes will host the DJ battle, which will feature a who's who of DJs. The reunion is sponsored in part by Ludacris' Conjure Cognac.
