University Switches to AppAssure Replay for Robust Bare Metal Restore and Ability to Restore Any Object in Minutes
University of Houston switches to AppAssure Replay software to achieve robust bare-metal restore and fast recovery of any object.
- (1888PressRelease) January 29, 2011 - Reston, VA - AppAssure Software, developer of the award-winning Replay4 backup and disaster recovery (DR) software, today announced that the University of Houston, an educational institution that serves more than 38,500 students in the nation's fourth-largest city, has switched to AppAssure Replay to enable reliable bare-metal restore (BMR) and multiple snapshot restore for College data, which resulted in reliable restore ability for the physical environment, along with at least $10,000 storage savings in past fiscal year.
"We provide the technical support for various departments of the College of Education at the University of Houston," says Michael Rapp, the Infrastructure/Data Applications Manager and Information Security Officer of the College of Education at the University of Houston. "We manage faculty mail boxes and desktops, along with the full-time staff's email and desktops. We've got network shares, web servers, file servers, etc. We do it all."
For years, Rapp and his colleagues had to live with an insufficient backup window of about 24 hours. "I held my breath all the time, hoping that the backups were working and that the data were there. I lived in fear of having to go to faculty members and say, 'sorry, those student files are gone.' It just became completely unworkable for me."
Rapp's team is fairly small, so he knew he needed a solution that was straightforward, reliable, and easy to manage for his backups. "Quick restore is key," notes Rapp, "but I also needed confidence that the solution was doing what it said it would do."
Once Rapp found AppAssure's Replay, he never looked back. "I was sold on Replay rather quickly," he says. "It is the best BMR software I have ever used. The granularity it provides for Exchange restore is invaluable. Plus, its P2V and V2P "backups" are very useful."
"Not only that," Rapp notes, "but my storage space has been reduced on one core by 103x and on a second core by 29x. This is fantastic!"
"Replay is just beautiful and it works," exclaims Rapp. "We had some Exchange corruption happen recently, and Replay allowed me to get down and restore at the email level rather than the entire information store. I could not have done that with DPM or the other solutions I had before Replay."
Rapp continues, "We needed a very robust backup/restore solution, as well as bare-metal restore ability for our physical environment and before Replay we just didn't have them. Now we do. Replay works and AppAssure's tech support is great as well!"
When asked what's on the horizon for Rapp and his team, he points to increased virtualization and using the hardware they have in a smarter way. Replay will be a significant part of Rapp's virtualization plan, which includes working with the entire University as it faces the challenges of updating the University's IT standards, practices, and policies. "I'll be working on a business continuity plan with my university colleagues for backups, disaster recovery, testing, replication, and virtualization. You can bet that Replay is my primary solution for all of this - it's reliable and does what a backup and disaster recovery software should do!"
