Over the next two weeks, over 120 events will be hosted by UNA-USA chapters across the country. Events will feature discussions, presentations, lectures, and festivals conveying the message of how the UN delivers support and relief to all corners of the globe and areas of extreme need.
"UN Day gives a voice to the UN in communities across the U.S. Citizens care about securing peace, promoting human rights, building economic prosperity and advancing global health," said Patrick Madden, executive director, UNA-USA. "The UN is in the middle of all of the world's urgent global conversations and crises."
In 1947, two years after ratifying the UN Charter, the UN General Assembly adopted a U.S.-sponsored resolution declaring October 24 United Nations Day. Since then, UN Day has been observed in countries large and small around the world. From that time forward, each U.S. president has issued an annual proclamation asking citizens to observe UN Day, and to reflect upon the importance of the UN to America's national interest.
The UNA Tampa Bay's mission is to educate the community and public officials about the activities of the United Nations System and to work for constructive US Leadership in an effective United Nations. The chapter has established an expanding presence in the Tampa Bay community and also at several local universities and colleges, including Eckerd College, St Petersburg College, Schiller University, Stetson College of Law, the University of South Florida, and The University of Tampa. The chapter welcomes new members, business and academic leaders, young professionals, and retirees, interested in giving back to make the world a better place.
