UN Think Tank Taps UAE Expertise
DCCE to contribute local and regional knowledge to formulating solutions for key common global development challenges.
- (1888PressRelease) September 24, 2013 - Dubai, UAE: The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UNSDSN) has tapped the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (Dubai Carbon) as its national member organisation in the UAE, to help pursue its mandate on mobilizing scientific and technical expertise towards formulating solutions and establishing best practices for sustainable development.
The collaboration between Dubai Carbon and the United Nations SDSN is seen as the natural next step to realise the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai for 'Green Economy for Sustainable Development'.
With the unprecedented scale of sustainable development challenges confronting the world, the UN think tank hopes to synergise worldwide efforts to address sustainable development challenges of ending poverty, increasing social inclusion, and sustaining the planet. Dubai Carbon is expected to provide key insights and strategic inputs based on its experience in successfully developing and implementing climate change initiatives, especially in greenhouse gas reduction initiatives as well as developing economically sustainable green projects in the UAE as well as throughout the Gulf region.
Waleed Salman, Chairman, Dubai Carbon says: "Our membership in this global initiative for social change is an important step towards helping push regional issues to the forefront, while at the same time allowing us to share our expertise in managing climate change. We are honoured to be given this distinction and privilege to contribute meaningfully to achieving sustainable development on a far reaching scale."
The United Nations SDSN gathers leaders from academia, society and private sectors across countries to facilitate the exchange of ideas on how to meet the global development challenge. As a global network of sustainable development experts, SDSN accelerates joint learning and helps to overcome the compartmentalization of technical and policy work by promoting integrated approaches to the interconnected economic, social, and environmental challenges confronting the world. The SDSN works closely with United Nations agencies, multilateral financing institutions, as well as other international organizations.
Mr. Guido Schmidt-Traub, Executive Director SDSN, noted that "The SDSN is building an international Network of stakeholders with deep technical expertise, and we are thrilled to extend membership to the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence. We look forward to working with DCCE to address one of the greatest sustainable development challenges of our time, climate change, which threatens the progress made towards the MDGs as well as future progress. We are especially excited to be expanding our network in the Middle East which stands to be both greatly affected by climate change, as well as a source of great innovation and a developer of solutions."
Under the leadership of Jeffrey Sachs, SDSN has exemplified that collaboration between all stakeholders is essential when tackling the challenges to sustainable development. Following this principle, the SDSN selected Dubai Carbon as an ideal organisation, set up as a private joint stock company involving Dubai's industrial shareholders, government entities through the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This will provide the automatic involvement of all relevant parties and facilitate the access to the required decision makers.
"We are a dynamic team at Dubai Carbon, and will roll up our sleeves to contribute our part to SDSN's action agenda for sustainable development." says Ivano Iannelli, CEO of Dubai Carbon.
Dubai Carbon is currently working on a series of pilot projects that can provide guidance for the economies in the region.
• In collaboration with EmiratesNBD and EMS, Dubai Carbon will finance the first energy efficiency upgrade project based on the shared savings approach in Energy Performance Contracting.
• 2013 foresees the launch of a publication focusing on success stories in sustainability within the energy sector. The "State of Energy Report" will be published by the Supreme Council of Energy with support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in October 2013 and might serve as a pilot project for similar publications throughout the region.
• Dubai Carbon is assisting the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in quantifying the customer's carbon footprint through electricity consumption.
• Dubai Carbon will distribute several hundred thousand energy efficient CFL light bulbs to households free of charge to reduce electricity demand, with the help of industry sponsors.
