UL 844 Approval Expands Scope of SGS's NRTL Services in North America
SGS’s laboratory in Suwanee, Georgia, USA, has been certified by OSHA as an NRTL capable of performing certification on lighting used in hazardous locations – UL 844.
- (1888PressRelease) September 20, 2017 - SGS’s hi-tech testing facility in Suwanee, Georgia, USA, has received recognition by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) capable of performing safety tests and certification on luminaires used in hazardous locations.
The expansion to include UL 844 in its NRTL scope is a further demonstration of the Georgia Laboratory’s growing list of capabilities. Suwanee offers services relating to a range of domestic and industrial electrical and electronic products, including testing on:
• Audio Visual
• IT
• Batteries
• Wireless
• Medical devices
• Household products
• Lighting
• Products for hazardous locations
David Chu, Global VP for CGR Electrical & Electronics, stated, “The UL 844 addition to our global capabilities adds benefits for both our North American and global operations.”
UL 844 covers fixed and portable lighting products that are installed and used in hazardous locations. These are defined as places such as oil rigs, mines, or any location where flammable liquids, vapors, gasses or combustible dust exists in large enough quantities to produce a fire or explosion.
In addition to UL 844, luminaries used in hazardous locations must also be certified to either UL 1598 or UL 8750 (LED) – the applicable standards for lighting used in ordinary locations. Suwanee has the capablility to test to all three standards.
Being an NRTL signifies that OSHA has recognized SGS in North America as meeting the requirements set out in 29 CFR 1910.7. Recognition means, “employers may use products approved by the NRTL to meet OSHA standards that require testing and certification of the products.”
The announcement of the expansion in its scope to include UL 844 certification was announced in a Federal Register Notice.
