News released by the University of Leeds, in the UK, February 3, revealed that silver could be highly effective in treating cancer.
(1888PressRelease) February 04, 2012 - MIAMI, FL - The medical profession has long used silver for burn victims due to its anti-bacterial properties. New studies show that silver could be used to replace platinum in certain chemotherapy drugs, with tests suggesting silver would be equally effective against cancer cells and less damaging to healthy cells, reducing the highly unpleasant side effects of the drug.
Tests are still in the early stages but look extremely promising. Researchers at the University of Leeds exposed breast and colon cancer cells to silver-based chemicals in a laboratory. Results showed that silver was as effective as the chemotherapy drug Cisplatin at killing cancer cells with far fewer side effects for healthy cells.
"Silver is already used extensively in the medical field, particularly for burn victims, due to its anti-bacterial properties," says Bill Hionas of Pan American Metals of Miami, a South Florida precious metals company. "Obviously this research is still in the early stages but results look extremely promising."
Silver gets approximately 50% of its demand from various industries, including medicine and dentistry. The current research could eventually lead to a treatment for certain cancers that is both cheaper and less damaging in terms of side effects. Researchers attribute the success of the trials to the structure surrounding silver atoms, known as silver's ligand. They believe this helps release silver ion into cells where it kills cancer.
